St John’s Island and Lazarus Island

St John’s Island and Lazarus Island are two of the Southern Islands that are currently zoned for sports recreational activities. These two islands are rich in natural fauna and flora, and many species of fishes, especially reef fishes, can be found here.

The Marine Research Institute occupies about half of St John’s Island, with the St John island trail occupying the other half. Surrounding shores tend to be rocky, steep and inaccessible during high tide. As a result, Lazarus Island is the better location. St John’s Island itself has only 2 notable fishing spots.

Points A and B

These 2 spots are shaded and are fairly close to the ferry jetty. This makes them the closest to the only public toilet on the island. A stretch of breakwater is built along the shore here, making it a suitable spot for luring as well as surf fishing. Possible fishes here:

• Barramundi
• Bream
• Golden Snapper
• Grouper
• Selars (also known as Horse Mackeral)
• Sicklefish
• Squid
• Tamban

Point C

Point C lies along the causeway linking St John’s Island to Lazarus island. Along the paved road are 4 small platforms which makes an easier spot to fish from than the breakwater itself.

The current along the causeway is strong most of the time, making it a favourable spot for fast swimming fishes. Artificial lures are effective in these conditions. Possible fishes here:

• Barracuda
• Barramundi
• Halfbeak
• Mackerel
• Needlefish
• Queenfish

When the current is slow, there will also be chances of landing groupers, snappers, and tuskfishes when bottom fishing. However, the area is shallow and rocky, which might make the attempt rather challenging.

Point D

Point D is adjacent to a small pontoon that is currently closed off. Do not underestimate the depth of this area, as it is actually at least 30 feet deep, making it one deepest spot around the island. Possible fishes here:

• Bream
• Golden Snapper
• Grouper
• Halfbeak

Point E

Point E is marked by a red beacon. It lies off a reclaimed part of the island that points out towards Sentosa island. Due to its protrusion, there are strong currents at the edge of this platform, which may affect your line depending on how far you cast out. Possible fishes here:

• Grouper
• Tuskfish
• … and sometimes even small Sharks (!)

Point F

Point F is an inlet with a shallow muddy bed. Possible fishes here:

• Barramundi
• Mullet school

Point G

Point G is a big lagoon at the back of Lazarus Island with a pristine white beach and clean, clear water.

• Rays
• Sand Whiting
• Tuskfish
